Woe Are We

11 Mar

Thursday night I had just sat on the couch with my bowl of ice cream, and was getting ready to start up my laptop, when my oldest son came out of his room and sat on the couch.

I looked at him quizzically.  He never comes out of his room in the evening.  If he does, he heads straight to the kitchen for some food.  He doesn’t sit on the couch.  Especially one in the same room his parents are in.

I break the ice after a minute.  “What’s up?”

He responds with his typical, “meh”, which I think means, I’m alright, but not really, so please ask more.

“Did you want to talk about something?”

“No,” he says.  “It’s just that the internet’s not working, and I’ve tried restarting it, and the modem keeps shutting off, and uuuuugh….”

Aaahhhh…

So the shirt I bought him a few years ago finally has REAL meaning.

The internet was down so I thought I would come out to play.

I sympathized as much as I could, and offered a few plans of action he could take, none of which worked.  He continued to mope around the rest of the night.  I offered him suggestions of what he could do instead of the computer, but all he wanted to do was get on the internet, so…. moping was the next best thing.

I mentally rolled my eyes about how attached he is to his computer

I was a little disappointed myself about not being able to connect….  but I had finished a 6am shift that day, and had another one the next day, so I just headed for bed.

Friday was a busy day at the hotel.  I had definitely earned my couch time.  Hubby had told me earlier the internet had been working all afternoon, so at 7pm sharp, I grabbed my ice cream, my computer, and plopped on the couch ready to blog.

I had just started it up, when number one son came out of his room.

Oh, no.  Not again.

Internet’s down.

This time, I REALLY felt his pain!

“This is ridiculous,” I state.  “Get me the phone and the last phone bill.  I’m calling.”

I made the call, but Son finished the phone call since the modem is in his room.  Turns out we have a very outdated modem and they are sending us a new one.  It should be here in 3 to 6 business days.

I’m embarrassed to say that I think I feel the way he does.  I NEED my computer!  I need to blog!  I need to catch up with my friends!  I need to search for St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes.  What am I supposed to do?

So I pouted a bit, then decided to take it as a sign that perhaps I should just go to bed.  After all I had to get up at 3am again for work.  So that’s what I did.

Fast forward to Saturday.  I ABSOLUTELY earned my couch time today.  This time, when I sat down I was able to connect to the internet.  So I caught up on everyone’s blogs, then sat down to write my own.   After 20 minutes of typing, I realized I wasn’t connected.  Ugh.  I copied everything I had typed up to that point and saved it on a word document.  That’s where I finished my story… and in the morning, when I get to the hotel where I’ll have free wireless, I’ll repost it on my site.

You don’t realize how much you use the Internet until it becomes unavailable to you. I, for one, can feel your pain. I’m on here quite a bit.

It’s true. You take it for granted. I certainly hope the new modem fixes it. :/

Yea, it really sucks when you don’t have access. We’ve had the same scenario when I am trying to add my two cents to everyone’s blogs and I am being really witty or insightful only to have the internet deny me access. Oh, the tragedy ! How will I ever spread my wisdom and knowledge to the rest of the world?

I’ve utilized your fall back plan at times. Save the message in a word format and post it later when I can steal, I mean, borrow some internet access. I’ve even resorted to posting via my new iPhone, but it is not as slick. Hope you get your internet dilemma resolved soon.

I was glad I had the backup plan too, because when I got back on this morning, most of what I’d written hadn’t been saved on my post. I guess the internet was out longer than I had thought.
Tragedy is right! It never even crossed my mind that YOU might not have access to internet – now I’m worried that there might be a post without your witty and insightful comments. Thank goodness you have an iPhone now. Don’t scare me like that.
      🙂

It’s sort of pathetic how dependent we are on the internet. It’s a great tool – a veritable fountain of information, but sometimes it’s like we’ve forgotten how to entertain ourselves. Maybe I should google “alternatives to the internet”, unless my connection goes down. At least I’m glad you were able to save your post to a word document before you lost it!

I’d like to think I’m not addicted to it. I usually don’t get on until couch time, but I’ve come to use it as a form of relaxation. So when it’s not there, I’m kinda lost. I did catch up on some magazines that have been piling up, and I definitely got more sleep than I would have if the internet had been up. But that doesn’t mean I’m okay with the internet being down…. it really is crazy how many things it offers. How DID we ever live without it?

Oh yes. I feel your son’s pain too. The longest I’ve ever gone without internet access was 24 hours. And it was BRUTAL.

24 hours straight? Yikes. I think I’d rather go without electricity for 24 hours than internet service.

I had to go a whole weekend without internet once. It was AWFUL! (We had a similar problem to yours.)
