Farewell My Friend

05 Jul

winnie the pooh

I’ve finally made the decision to put my beloved ASUS computer to rest.  It’s been on life support for the past 6 months or so, I just haven’t been able to let it go.

Last week, when I wiggled and jiggled and tugged and pulled, and still couldn’t get it to charge, I knew it was time. We barely made it through last year’s surgery, at least I barely made it through, so….

I went shopping.

The first day, I scrutinized all the laptops.  None of them seemed to be as comfortable as my ASUS.  Not even the newer ASUS’s.  (Touchscreen?  On a laptop?  Not ready for that yet.)

So I left empty handed.  And continued to struggle with charging the ASUS and bringing it back to life.

The fear of not being able to revive my computer enough to save all my stuff, made me realize I needed to pick something, or I would have nothing.

After work yesterday, I stopped by the computer store again, and again I scrutinized all the laptops.  I kept going back to a Samsung – a brand I’d never considered before.  James, the store rep,  was very patient with me.  Answering all my questions.  Addressing all my concerns.  I know nothing about memory or hard drives or processors.   All I know is how I want it to feel when I’m on the couch blogging, pinning, and word gaming.

When I finally gave James the okay to ring up the laptop, a sob escaped my lips.  Just saying the words “I’ll take this one” made me feel like I was betraying a good friend.  And I told him so.  James was kind enough not to laugh at me.  My Hubby?  Not so much. I just shrugged him off.  He doesn’t understand the connection I had with my ASUS.

With the bag in hand, I walked out to my car.  My heart was heavy.  I had a strong feeling I would be back within the 15 days saying I didn’t like it.

I came home, plugged the Samsung in next to the couch, plopped down with some ice cream and opened up the ASUS.  I needed to spend the last half hour of its battery life surfing the internet, blogging and pinning one more time with my old friend.

When the end neared, I closed it up, set it aside, and carefully opened up the Samsung for the first time.

I was nervous and uncomfortable at first.  I’m unfamiliar with Windows 8 and haven’t heard very good reviews about it.  I fidgeted around with it for a while, loaded up Google Chrome and was surprised to see all my bookmarks pop up on the screen.

hmm… the adjustment might be easier than I thought.  I read through a few of my favorite blogs and typed up a few comments.  The feel of the keyboard was, dare I say, even more comfortable than the ASUS.  By the end of the night, I was pretty certain I’d found a new friend.

Of course, the ASUS will always be near and dear to me.  From the sticky mouse pad, to the flour between the keys, it has been a true friend.  I’m sad to let it go, but I have a good feeling about my new friend.  Please welcome Sammie into our blog circle.

I hope he’ll be with us for a while.

We’ve only had a few squabbles so far. I have a feeling I can adjust to some of its peculiarities. So yes, I think we’ll be very happy together.

Me too! I’d never heard it before and it’s such a good quote!

*Moment of silence for the ASUS*

And now, a hearty Howdy Do to Sammie!
Your beloved ASUS and you had a good life together, but it’s time to move on. I’m sure this is how ASUS would’ve liked it.

The ASUS was my first laptop, and it was all mine. I loved that I didn’t have to share a computer anymore. I actually traveled to a couple of different stores to get it, since the first store didn’t have it in stock – and I wasn’t going to settle for something else. We DID have a good life together. Big shoes for Sammie to fill!

    Welcome, Sammie!

I can totally understand your attachment to your Asus. (I’m using my very own Asus right now and I love it more than any computer I’ve ever had. And there have been a few.) It’s good to know I can come to you for tips when it’s time for me to buy a new computer. Of course, I’m not planning on that happening for years!

Aww! You have an Asus too? Don’t you just love it? I totally went to the store determined to get another one, but all they had were touch screens – with keyboard of course, but using the mouse seemed more difficult, so you’re almost forced to use the touch screen, and for whatever reason, I was against that. Plus, they cost more. :/
So Sammie was the next best thing. And I like it. It has some quirks, but I think I can learn to live with them. I certainly hope you won’t need another one for years. Just don’t walk around with it while dragging the battery charger behind you. It tends to loosen the connection – or so I’ve heard. *ahem*

Hi Sammie, I’m still getting used to Windows 8 as well, on my new friend “Lappy the laptop”.

Luckily, since I mainly use the internet, I haven’t fussed with Windows 8 very much. I have had this for about 4 days, though, and I still haven’t figured out where the “shut down” button is. Never thought I’d have to read the manual to figure out how to power it down. Perhaps you know? Right now, I control-alt-delete and shut down from there.

Go to Desktop, it looks almost like old Windows versions, and has a shut down button.

Is it hidden? Because when I go to the desktop, there’s no shutdown/sleep/restart button. I feel so dumb. 🙂

Ya know, I thought I was the ONLY person, on the face of the earth, that thinks of my computer as one of my best friends. So I totally relate to feeling like you betrayed your old computer when buying a new one!

But I am happy to hear your new computer is working out so well and better than you expected! YAY!

Oh good! I’m glad you understand! I honestly felt like I was betraying My ASUS.
And just like with my second child, I’ve realized I have enough room in my heart to love two computers. 🙂

We thought of you while watching TV the other day.

There was someone working in a hotel in Miami and someone complained that they could not see the sun set into the sea.

The receptionist tried to explain that the sun sets in the West, while the sea is the the East of Miami. They could watch the sun RISE?

Not good enough for the customer, who demanded an upgrade to the best room in the hotel.

But you already HAVE the best room in the hotel.

    Not good enough…..

Don’t know how you do it.

Oh yeah…. I’ve had a few guests like that. They make for fun stories. But funny you should bring this up, because I was just ready to post a story about why I like my job despite these seemingly unsatisfiable guests. 🙂

Alas, poor ASUS, we knew you well. I am about ready to make the jump from my old ACER desktop. Hard to let her go, but all good things must come to an end. Biggest concern I have is moving all my favorites and files over to the new one without losing anything. Was considering the jump to Apple like Mel’s but them are pretty pricey toys.

Good luck with Sammie. I know you two will hit it off. Is Sammie “food proof” enough to help out with a few recipes?

My hubby is a huge advocate of Apple, and I know Meleah loves her Apple, so I actually looked into getting one. But when I consider what I use it for, it really wasn’t worth it to me to spend the extra bucks on one. I look up recipes and blog. My hubby uses it for his home-based business. It was worth it for him to get.
Sammie has been through one round of baking and has lived to tell about it. I’m thinking he’ll make a pretty good baking assistant.
