Farewell My Friend

I’ve finally made the decision to put my beloved ASUS computer to rest.  It’s been on life support for the past 6 months or so, I just haven’t been able to let it go. 

Last week, when I wiggled and jiggled and tugged and pulled, and still couldn’t get it to charge, I knew it was time. We barely made it through last year’s surgery, at least I barely made it through, so….

I went shopping.

The first day, I scrutinized all the laptops.  None of them seemed to be as comfortable as my ASUS.  Not even the newer ASUS’s.  (Touchscreen?  On a laptop?  Not ready for that yet.)

So I left empty handed.  And continued to struggle with charging the ASUS and bringing it back to life.

The fear of not being able to revive my computer enough to save all my stuff, made me realize I needed to pick something, or I would have nothing.

After work yesterday, I stopped by the computer store again, and again I scrutinized all the laptops.  I kept going back to a Samsung – a brand I’d never considered before.  James, the store rep,  was very patient with me.  Answering all my questions.  Addressing all my concerns.  I know nothing about memory or hard drives or processors.   All I know is how I want it to feel when I’m on the couch blogging, pinning, and word gaming.

When I finally gave James the okay to ring up the laptop, a sob escaped my lips.  Just saying the words “I’ll take this one” made me feel like I was betraying a good friend.  And I told him so.  James was kind enough not to laugh at me.  My Hubby?  Not so much. I just shrugged him off.  He doesn’t understand the connection I had with my ASUS.

With the bag in hand, I walked out to my car.  My heart was heavy.  I had a strong feeling I would be back within the 15 days saying I didn’t like it.

I came home, plugged the Samsung in next to the couch, plopped down with some ice cream and opened up the ASUS.  I needed to spend the last half hour of its battery life surfing the internet, blogging and pinning one more time with my old friend.

When the end neared, I closed it up, set it aside, and carefully opened up the Samsung for the first time.

I was nervous and uncomfortable at first.  I’m unfamiliar with Windows 8 and haven’t heard very good reviews about it.  I fidgeted around with it for a while, loaded up Google Chrome and was surprised to see all my bookmarks pop up on the screen.

hmm… the adjustment might be easier than I thought.  I read through a few of my favorite blogs and typed up a few comments.  The feel of the keyboard was, dare I say, even more comfortable than the ASUS.  By the end of the night, I was pretty certain I’d found a new friend.

Of course, the ASUS will always be near and dear to me.  From the sticky mouse pad, to the flour between the keys, it has been a true friend.  I’m sad to let it go, but I have a good feeling about my new friend.  Please welcome Sammie into our blog circle.

 

I hope he’ll be with us for a while.
