The More Things Change

11 Jul

…… the more I like other things to stay the same.

Change used to bring me a lot of stress.  I suppose it still does now, but I’m learning to cope with it much more easily.   I’ve been forced to really, since the job I have now is forever changing.  My work schedule, my co-workers, my guests and all their issues….

Because of that, I like everything else to be the same.  I like that I wear a uniform every day – no decision to make when getting dressed.

I make the same thing for lunch every day,  even though I will get the same teasing from my co-workers when I bring it out to eat.  But it’s worth it not to have to stress over what to bring.

I eat the same thing for breakfast.  I use the same bowl and spoon for ice cream.  I eat the same ice cream.

My shopping excursions are easy.

A few weeks ago, when I was looking to replace my ASUS computer, I headed to the store to get another ASUS.   I would have gotten the exact same model, had they had it, just to avoid the stress of changing.

But they didn’t have that model.  Nor did  they have an ASUS that was similar.  (Did I mention the touch screens?  On a laptop?  Nothing could be further from what I’m used to than that.)

So I left.  I had wanted something the same.  They didn’t have it.  I didn’t want the stress of looking into something new.  So I left.

But I was forced to go back.  And I made a decision.  And luckily all is well.

So it came as a surprise to me that I actually went looking for a different brand of running shoes.  I have loved the Nike Frees that Abby recommended eons ago.  (Changing to that brand wasn’t too difficult since the reviews were coming from someone I knew.)

Since I had something that worked,  I stayed with it.  When that pair wore down, I bought another of the same kind.  Same color even.  And when that pair wore down, I bought another pair.  Same kind.  Same color.

My Shooz

But now, I’m thinking of something new.  I’m afraid, of course, to make the decision on my own.  My fear of failing is strong.  So I read many online reviews, tried on many different brands, and finally came to a decision.

my new shooz

Brooks PureConnect

They arrived today.

These shooz were bought totally on faith.  I was never able to find them in stores, so I had not tried them on.  I’ve only read reviews on what others have said.  So I’m very nervous.

But when I pushed the button to order and received an email that said “Woohoo!  Your order has been accepted!”  I had a good feeling.  Woohoo is MY word, and used quite often by me in texts and emails.  So these must be the right shoe for me.

PLUS!  They told me they “couldn’t be happier that I chose to order from them , unless there was ice cream involved.”

Ooooh,  they know me well.

So I have a good feeling.  Of course, I’ll know more once  I take them out on a test run.

And I’ll be sure to let you know in case any of you are just as nervous as me about change.

Whoohoo! New shooz! You are starting to get up there in Abby’s range of footwear. I admire you guys having to rotate your shoes due to the mileage. I am still working my 2012 ASICs from last year’s half. I’m a bit like you – comfortable with the status quo, hard to change. Never really got into the minimalist shoe thing but it does intrigue me. I’ve been faithfully hanging onto my ASICs Gel Nimbus for years (I do change colors each year). Maybe I do need to break the mold, try something different. Hope the new Brooks live up to their reputation. In the meanwhile, I am sure that Sammie is starting to grow on you.

Changing shoes is a BIG deal. What worries me the most is if I don’t like them, I can’t return them, because I ran in them, but if I don’t run in them, I don’t know if I like them….so you can see my dilemma.
Sammie is still trying to win my heart. There are some things about it that drive me crazy. Don’t know if it’s this particular computer, or if it’s a quirk in all the Samsungs. But I have my own quirks, so I should be accepting of others. Right?
By the way, the best thing about the minimalist shoes is how light they are. The ones I’ve had feel cushiony on the inside, but are so light and let you run naturally. I don’t want to sway your opinion, but they’re worth looking into the next time you go a-hunting for some new ones.

I have always tended to play safe – rash changes often lead to disaster for me, like the time I changed brands of bike. I thought I was getting a bargain, but got a total turkey. Turkeys are not good for riding…

I suppose it’s those same kind of disasters that have led me to be leery of change. Once I find something that works, I generally stick with it. But sometimes, I feel the urge to try something new, and pray it doesn’t turn out to be a turkey. Unless it’s my new lunch. Then turkey would be good.

Ooooh, you must follow up with a review!! I rotate my Nikes with Brooks Pure Flows (same family as the Connects). I tried some Connects, but they run narrow, and I have wide (Filipino) feet. I could tell they just wouldn’t do for me after prancing around the house for a while, and was able to return them before taking them on the road. I’m interested to know what you think of them. I really liked the minimal feel, but alas…

I thought I remembered you having a pair of Brooks. When I first took the Connects out of the box, they looked like kid shoes. I was sure they wouldn’t fit, but I was able to squeeze them on. They fit like a glove, and I wondered if I shoulda gone a half size larger. I ran in them anyway. The right one created a blister on my ankle – not due to the size I don’t think – but I managed 6 miles in them. Despite the blister, they felt great, and I enjoyed the run! I’ve heard great things about Brooks. You like the Pure Flows, huh?

Yeah, I like ’em. They’re a notch less minimal and they’ve got more cushioning and a wider foot bed than the Connects. I’m on my 2nd pair, the first lasted about 500 miles!

Talking of trainers, my younger son has taken up running and bought himself some Nikes the other day. Not sure what they are, but they are amazingly light – I almost expected them to float away when I let go of them!

I now have trainer envy – mine being from the bargain end of the spectrum… (But then again, I don’t run in them so really that is not an issue).

Yeah! The minimalist shoes they have out now feel as light as flip flops. In fact, when my Brooks arrived, the box felt like it was empty. It makes a difference not having to lug the extra weight when you’re running.
The ONLY shoe I’ll spend decent money on is a running shoe. Because I run. All my other shoes are bargain basement specials. 🙂

Iam sure you will love your shoes… they look really great! 🙂 Let us know how it goes! (I am a little like that about change… but probably just because life has forced it down my throat so many times LOL!) 😀 Hugs!

Exactly! When your hit with so much change, it’s nice to be able to keep some things the same. But then again, sometimes change is good. And I think I’m going to like my shoes. I want to try them one more time before I give them a full review. 🙂

My feet are way too picky to buy over the internet. I eat the same thing every day. I travel the same road, never taking a different route. I feel safe in my rut, and if one little thing causes a bump in my rut, I don’t recover well. (and I get bitchy)

I am the SAME way. My work is all over the place though. Every day different – not knowing when I’ll be working the next week – or what shifts I’ll be working. So when it comes to my home life, I want a rut. Drives my hubby crazy, but so be it. Better than being bitchy. 😉
So glad to see you again! You’ve been missed!

I like knowing what I’m going to be doing on the same day, same time, and Joe likes to mix it up. There’s no common space between a stick in the mud and an outgoing person. But having job-jitters means you NEED to have a safe place to land and de-stress.

I am a bit like you in this respect. I form habits and stick with them… until I burn out on whatever it is. I am currently enjoying a daily breakfast of vanilla yogurt with frozen blueberries. I’ve been eating this for weeks. It will probably get old soon though, and I’ll be forced to find something new to eat. I drink the same flavored creamer in my coffee for months on end. I have been picky about my shoes for years though, because when I change from my usual brand, something ends up hurting.

I find it nice not to have to make decisions about meals, but I do change it up every few years or so. lol
Changing shoes is always a risk, and since they’re not easily returnable, I’m always nervous about it. But sometimes even I take a risk and change things up. 🙂

Oh, I do hope your new sneakers are fabulous. I can’t buy shoes online. I have to try them on!

I wanted to try these on, but couldn’t find them in any stores. So I took the chance. I still haven’t made up my mind about them yet.

Me too. The only way I can handle it is to be well prepared for it. 🙂
