Giddyup Horsey!

Some days my driving abilities really impress me.

Or maybe it was just part of the big plan to make things a little easier for me after what the last month has dished out (long, busy days at work – exhausting drives home – you remember, I’m sure…)

Whatever the case, I turned what could have been a hair pulling, teeth gritting, mumbling under my breath, commute home into a proud, pat myself on the back, “aren’t you the smart one?” ride home.

I had finished up a nine hour shift at work, and although I was on my feet most of the time, I had 2 other people at the desk with me, a chance to go to the bathroom when needed, and a 15 minute SIT DOWN lunch!  I know, right? It was heavenly!

But still, after nine hours, and having been up since 3am, I was ready to be home.  I had just crossed the river into Illinois when the I saw the signs warning me of the two left lane closure happening in 2 miles.

ugh.

A lot of people got over to the right after seeing the first sign.  I used to be that courteous until I got so upset by people staying in the soon to be closed lane, and then cutting in front of me, thereby pushing me further and further back, that this time, I stayed to the left.  A semi eventually came over to keep more people from “cutting” which was fine by me.  I just stayed behind him knowing no one would get past us.  After all, we were first, right?

We crawled along as the 3 lanes became 2, and then inched along when the 2 became one.  It was at that point – the moment when I realized this was gonna take a while – that I saw the exits for the 255 Interstate.  I didn’t want to take that interstate, because it goes North and South, and I wanted East. BUT an idea miraculously popped into my head.   I had suddenly remembered that the exit consisted of two lanes.  One of the lanes led to the 255 North and 255 South exits. The other lane was a through lane leading back to the interstate I was on, you know, in case someone “accidentally” exited.

Brilliant!

I cut over, acting like I was really taking the exit, heehee, then sped up to 60mph, passing the exits to my right, passing the stand-still traffic to my left, and whistling all the while!

When it came time to merge in with the traffic on my interstate, I snuck in right away, and 30 seconds later, all the lanes opened back up again!

I tell ya – I was grinnin’ from ear to ear and high-fivin’ myself the rest of the way home.

I just hope people weren’t noticing, because I have to make the same commute again tomorrow – and I’ll be a little ticked if the others are all in my express lane.

But seeing this is the weekend, the traffic most likely did not consist of the normal commuters, so I have a pretty good inkling that tomorrow there will be a whole new set of drivers on the road.

And that can only mean good news for me.

P.S.   For those of you who aren’t aware, the license plates on my Mustang say Whoa Horsey…. hence the title.  🙂
